Gulf Coast Claims Facility Announces The Appointment
Of Jack M. Weiss to Select Appeals Judges
Kenneth R. Feinberg, Administrator of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF), today announced the appointment of Jack M. Weiss of Louisiana to select the appeals judges who will hear limited appeals from claims decisions made by the GCCF.
Weiss is a native of New Orleans. He has served since 2007 as Chancellor of the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in Baton Rouge.
Section VI D of the GCCF Protocol for Interim and Final Claims (February 8th, 2011) provides that:
"1. The Claims Administrator shall select one distinguished member of the legal profession (e.g., a retired federal or state judge, respected legal academic, professional mediator or arbitrator) who will identify distinguished members of the legal community (e.g., retired federal or state judges, respected legal academics, professional mediators or arbitrators) to serve as impartial GCCF Appeals Judges."
After an extensive, comprehensive search, Mr. Feinberg has chosen Chancellor Weiss for this important assignment. Mr. Feinberg stated: "I canvassed the Gulf region in an attempt to find an individual who would bring unquestioned credibility, integrity and sound judgment to the process of selecting the appeals judges. I have found that person in Jack Weiss. He brings decades of experience to this assignment, both as a nationally recognized law professor and administrator. I am confident that I have chosen the right person for the job."
Chancellor Weiss responded: "I am deeply honored to be entrusted with this important public service assignment. My goal is simple: to select impartial, highly competent judges to decide GCCF appeals fairly, expeditiously, and in keeping with the law."
Weiss has requested that any compensation he receives for his work be donated to the Louisiana State University Foundation to be used to fund scholarships at the LSU Law Center. Weiss expects to conclude the selection process within the next 60 days.
